When Should You Contact an Emergency Dentist?
Contact us promptly if you experience:
- Severe or persistent tooth pain
- Facial or gum swelling
- A broken, cracked or knocked-out tooth
- A damaged filling, crown or bridge
- Bleeding that does not stop
- Pain when biting or signs of infection
- An injury involving the teeth, gums or jaw
An examination can help identify the problem. The dentist may recommend X-rays and discuss treatment. Care may include a filling, root canal treatment, crown, extraction or referral when appropriate.
What to Do Before Your Appointment
For a knocked-out permanent tooth, hold it by the crown, not the root. If dirty, rinse it gently without scrubbing. If possible, place it back in its socket. Otherwise, keep it moist in milk and seek immediate dental care. Do not reinsert a knocked-out baby tooth.
For a broken tooth, save any pieces, rinse gently, and apply a cold compress to the outside of the face to reduce swelling. For bleeding, apply gentle pressure with clean gauze. These steps do not replace professional care.
When to Seek Medical Emergency Care
Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department for severe facial trauma, uncontrolled bleeding, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or other life-threatening symptoms. A dental office is not a substitute for emergency medical care.
