Wisdom Tooth Assessment and Removal
Wisdom teeth are the final molars, usually developing in the late teens or early adulthood.

Maple Ridge Dental Centre provides wisdom tooth assessments and extractions in Maple Ridge based on clinical findings and appropriate imaging. Problem-free wisdom teeth may be monitored regularly.
When Might Wisdom Tooth Extraction Be Recommended?
A wisdom tooth may be partially erupted, trapped beneath the gum or bone, or difficult to clean. Removal may be recommended when it is associated with:
- Pain, tenderness or swelling
- Repeated gum infection
- Tooth decay or gum disease
- Persistent food trapping
- Damage to the neighbouring molar
- A dental abscess or cyst
- Other clinical concerns
Your Wisdom Tooth Assessment
Your dentist will examine the area and may recommend dental X-rays. When three-dimensional detail could affect planning, CBCT (cone beam computed tomography) may be used to evaluate tooth position, roots, surrounding bone and nearby structures. Imaging is recommended when clinically indicated.
We will review the findings, discuss monitoring or removal, and explain the expected benefits and risks. Some wisdom teeth can be removed in our office; complex cases may require specialist referral.
What Happens During Removal?
Local anaesthetic is used to numb the area. Depending on the tooth’s position, the dentist may need to open the gum, remove surrounding bone or divide the tooth into sections. Stitches may be placed when necessary. The procedure will be explained before treatment.
Recovery and Aftercare
Discomfort, swelling, bruising or jaw stiffness can occur after removal. Follow the instructions for caring for the extraction site, eating, cleaning your mouth and using recommended medications. Contact us if bleeding does not stop, pain or swelling worsens, or you develop fever, a bad taste or feel unwell.
Does every impacted wisdom tooth need removal?
No. The recommendation depends on symptoms, disease risk, tooth position and whether nearby structures are affected.
Will I need a specialist referral?
Not necessarily. Referral depends on complexity, tooth position, roots, and your medical history.
